 PRESS RELEASE
WAL-MART SUPERCENTER PROJECT

City of Johnstown
November 18, 2009

Despite what has been reported in the media, it has never been the intention of this City to “kill the project”.  The City of Johnstown unanimously passed a resolution on November 16, 2009 that will enable the Wal-Mart Supercenter project to go forward.  The Council authorized the Fulton County Federal Credit Union located in the Town of Johnstown to have sewer service to its building because the Credit Union septic system would be compromised by the new access road construction.  It is our opinion approval for seven (7) additional parcels is not necessary for successful completion of the Wal-Mart Supercenter.

The Council understands and supports the City of Gloversville in its efforts to locate the Wal-Mart Supercenter in its city.  In fact the City of Johnstown has been a willing partner and has cooperated in the past with the City of Gloversville and the Town of Johnstown to provide sewer services outside city boundaries.  This City has approved sewer services on numerous occasions to locations in the Town of Johnstown.  Previously approved connections include the Meco Fire Station, Meco Stewart’s, McDonald’s and Walgreens.

It is the obligation of the elected officials of this City to have the vision and courage to protect the interest of their taxpayers.  At the same time, we recognize the importance of supporting our sister city in her endeavors and participating in promoting beneficial regional growth.  This legislation strikes that balance.
