From school to career, family to retirement, the Johnstown Public
Library can help you through all stages of life. Whether you want to open a
business, work towards a GED, research ancestors and study local history, or
learn about community events, the library is a perfect place to start.
If you have children, bring them here for story hour or any of
our other children’s activities. While you’re waiting, you can read a book or
even research day care centers. When it comes time to plan for retirement, we’ll
direct you to information about investments and health care. Special
programming and services entertain and educate you and your family along the
way.
Our collection is approximately 35,000
pieces with special collections dedicated to Local History, Education/Job
Information, and Business. Materials include books, audio and videocassettes,
CD’s, DVD’s and magazines.
Automation has been fully implemented within the library offering
patrons the opportunity to not only view this collection, but the collections of
all libraries in the Mohawk Valley Library System/Southern Adirondack Library
System (MVLS/SALS) for a total of more than 1 million available titles. If the
Johnstown Library does not own a specific title, our Inter-Library Loan
Department will gladly search and request the item be sent here for use. In
addition to catalogs, patrons have computer access to databases that index over
6,000 magazines and journals. Home access for the “electronic catalog” is available by
going to
http://johnstownpubliclibrary.info and choosing the
library catalog link. Database access
is also available at that site by choosing the online database link. Databases
include medical, genealogical, current issue information and encyclopedias for
all ages. Also provided are links to government web sites.

How to Get a Library Card
Library cards are offered free to anyone. The new automated
system allows members to use their bar-coded card in all 65 libraries that
comprise the MVLS/SALS consortium. Applying members are asked to provide a valid
driver’s license showing current address. If the driver’s license does not show
current information, two items, such as a checkbook or mail, can be used to
validate current address along with the driver’s license. Cards are renewable
every three years. Children under the age of 18 must register with a parent or
legal guardian.
Fines and Loan Periods
The library only charges $.05 per day per item for late fines. A maximum of
$2.00 per item is allowed. The exception to this policy is for TREK Packs and
Math Kits, with a fee of $1.00 per day with a maximum of $10.00 accrued. Member
accounts are frozen when charges of $5.00 or more are reached. Loan periods for
most items are either two or four weeks with usually a one-time renewal
allowed. This may be done by calling the library. Videos only circulate for two
or seven days depending on the classification. Staff will reserve most material
upon request.
A 24-hour book-drop is available for your
convenience.
